Information for owners of boarding houses converted into hostels
The philosophy and the foundation of a hostel of the backpackers-club is fundermentally different from a hotel. Most Important here is not the high cost of rooms, repairs undertaken, interior furnishings, and even the softness of expensive mattresses.
It is the atmosphere that is most important!
So from my experience in hostel management, even when faced with Spartan conditions of the accomodation in a non central location, we were able to achieve regular full capacity and fully cater for all backpacker tourists. I was able to repeatedly acheive what teams of marketers for larger hotels could not. As a result of the hundreds of reviews - the far majority of them positive reviews from tourists with a high percentage of repeat bookings achieved.
In Eastern Europe there are many owners of private hotel and hostel properties that do not yet use internet to achieve bookings. Whilst in reality it looks like the entire hotel market will eventually achieve an online booking capability to some degree or other to compete in a difficult market place.
My personal opinion in the future online presence of businesses that compete in the hotel-mediation activities is worth billions of dollars, not only will it be felt progressivly more and more in the online enviroment, but will eventually totally dominant it.
