An estimated 27,000 migrants and refugees are being housed in Italy’s parishes, shrines, monasteries, and other religious institutions—up from 23,000 in September, when Pope Francis appealed to every parish in Europe to shelter at least one refugee family.
L’Osservatore Romano reported that on January 17, the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, over 6,000 migrants will be present in St. Peter’s Square for the Pope’s Sunday Angelus address.
